Bayern reach German Cup quarters, holders Stuttgart also through

Record winners Bayern Munich netted from three set pieces as they turned the tables on Union Berlin with a 3-2 away win on Wednesday to edge into the German Cup quarter-finals.
Weeks after a lucky 2-2 Bundesliga draw for Bayern in the capital which ended their winning start to the season, the Bavarians fielded a strong side which got the job done thanks to two own goals and Harry Kane's header.
Holders VfB Stuttgart sauntered through with a 2-0 win at Bochum after Philipp Strompf also scored an own goal and was sent off for the second-tier side.
Freiburg defeated Darmstadt 2-0 at home and second-division Holstein Kiel beat Bundesliga outfit SV Hamburg on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time.
The last-eight draw is on Sunday for matches in February.
Bundesliga leaders Bayern struggled mightily against Union's set pieces last month, conceding twice, but this time two corners and a free-kick from the visitors caused all the havoc.
Joshua Kimmich's corner led to the opener as the ball hit Ilyas Ansah's leg and rolled in on 12 minutes. Kane headed in another Kimmich corner 12 minutes later.
A strange handball by Jonathan Tah allowed Union's Leopold Querfeld to pull one back from the spot, but Diogo Leite headed Michael Olise's free-kick into his own net on half-time.
Union were awarded another penalty in the second half when Kane was adjudged to have elbowed an opponent when heading clear in the box. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was incensed as Querfeld made it 3-2.
But the visitors clung on despite heavy pressure to progress.
"The most important thing is that we're through. It was a very, very important victory," Bayern defender Konrad Laimer told ZDF as they stayed unbeaten domestically this term.
Harshly dismissed
Stuttgart meanwhile had some luck in Bochum. In trying to clear a long throw-in, Strompf could only glance his header beyond his own keeper Timo Horn and into the net on 12 minutes.
Things got worse for Uwe Rösler's Bochum and Strompf just before the break when he was harshly dismissed for a professional foul after video review. Home fans reacted with fury.
The supporters let off a flurry of flares at half-time but as the smoke cleared, Stuttgart were soon 2-0 up through in-form Deniz Undav's header.
"The 1-0 helped of course, then the red card came and it made it easier for us," said Undav, keen to extend his streak of scoring in his last four domestic games in Saturday's league clash with Bayern.
It was a return to winning ways for Stuttgart after Sunday's late 2-1 Bundesliga defeat at Hamburg.
Freiburg's Vincenzo Grifo put the hosts in front on 42 against second-tier Darmstadt with a penalty after Johan Manzambi was brought down by Patric Pfeiffer.
Italy midfielder Grifo later set up Lucas Höler for the second goal and hit the bar with another spot-kick. Darmstadt defender Matej Maglica was then sent off for a second yellow.
Bayer Leverkusen won 1-0 at Borussia Dortmund in the pick of Tuesday's last-16 games.
