RB Leipzig retook second place in the Bundesliga after a 2-0 win against Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Leipzig had temporarily dropped positions following Saturday's matches, but are again number two and six points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Bremen, meanwhile, dropped to ninth.

Despite consistent pressure from Leipzig, the game stayed goalless at half-time.

But 19-year-old Assan Ouédraogo received a pass from Ridle Baku near the edge of the box and powered a strike into the net to break the deadlock in the 63rd minute.

Amos Pieper was on target for Bremen in the 71st but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Substitute Xaver Schlager then sealed the win for Leipzig in the 80th after a corner, as Ole Werner defeated his ex-club Bremen, where he worked as coach between November 2021 and May 2025.

"It's a great pleasure to take the three points again after the defeat to Hoffenheim. It shows that we can work very focused as a team even with little training time," Werner said.

Ouédraogo said he had "the perfect week" after making his debut for the Germany national team with a goal in Monday's 6-0 win against Slovakia.

"I would say it was more or less the perfect week: first the goal for the national team and scoring again today. It doesn't get better than that," he said.

In the late Sunday game, Union Berlin claimed a narrow 1-0 win at St Pauli.

Rani Khedira's first shot after a long throw-in was blocked by his own team-mate, but he took the rebound and scored the winner in the 44th.

The hosts got close to the equalizer in the 75th, but Mathias Pereira Lage's effort smashed off the far post.

Union moved up to eighth, while Pauli remained in the relegation zone in 16th as they suffered an eighth consecutive defeat.

On Saturday, Bayern thrashed Freiburg 6-2, Bayer Leverkusen cruised to a 3-1 win against VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund were held to a 3-3 draw by VfB Stuttgart.
