The chair of the Committee on Security and Defence in the EU Parliament, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, has sharply criticized the newly tabled US plan to end the war in Ukraine.

"The US's so-called 'peace plan' would be a crazy dictated peace that would destroy NATO, dictate who can and cannot be a member, and solely reward Russia, a war criminal," Strack-Zimmermann, a member of Germany's pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), said on Saturday.

The plan of President Donald Trump is "completely unacceptable and jeopardizes the security of other countries in Europe," she warned, demanding that it is now up to the German government to "finally take a stand."

The politician called for Ukraine to finally be given all the support it needs to defend itself against Russian attacks, saying former German chancellor Olaf Scholz had failed to do so.

"Supplying Taurus [cruise missiles] would provide the support Ukraine needs, even if the US fails to do so under its unpredictable president," she said in comments addressed at the incumbent Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"This is about the security of Europe. Europe must stand up for this, Europe must step in when other partners fail to do so."

Proposed almost four-years after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbour, Washington's 28-point plan would force Kiev to cede additional territory in the east, cap the size of its military, and agree that it will never join NATO.
