Three in four Germans support compulsory year of service, poll shows

A clear majority of Germans would support introducing a compulsory period of social service for all citizens, a Forsa poll showed.

The survey for Germany's Stern magazine and broadcaster RTL found that 75% of respondents backed the idea, which would involve at least six months of service. A total of 23% were opposed, while 2% gave no answer.

The question listed social institutions, the armed forces and civil-protection agencies as examples of where such service could be carried out. Respondents were also told that the service should take place during the course of one's life.

Military conscription was suspended in Germany in 2011, effectively ending both mandatory military and civilian service. It was replaced by a federal voluntary service scheme.

Germany has been debating the introduction of a general civic service for years, particularly in connection with discussions about military conscription.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has advocated for a universal service requirement.

In the long term, a period of compulsory service for everyone would be fairest - some serving in the armed forces, others in social institutions, he said last week.

The conservative-led government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which took office in May, has agreed on a reform of military service that will initially be based on voluntary participation.
