German basketball national team coach Alex Mumbru has gone to hospital in his native Spain after the EuroBasket 2025 title win to undergo pancreatitis surgery.
The German Basketball Federation (DBB) told dpa that this treatment is necessary and that Mumbro is expected to return for World Cup qualifiers in November.
Mumbro was hospitalised two days before the start of the Euros and spent five in a clinic in Finland. He returned to the team but apart from one match coaching duties remained with his assistant Alan Ibrahimagic.
World champions Germany won the title on Sunday in Riga by beating Turkey in the final. Mumbro did not take part in the post-match celebrations and was also absent from Monday's reception in Frankfurt upon the team's return.
"Health comes first. I told him throughout the tournament: do what you can do. He wanted to be part of it, which was not unreasonable – not even from a medical point of view," DBB president Ingo Weiss told dpa.
"Our team doctor looked after Alex and monitored him throughout his entire stay in Riga."
Sporting director Peter Radegast said in an interview on the DBB website that Mumbro "was very ill.
"He himself revealed that it was acute pancreatitis caused by gallstones. The pain must have been terrible; he was given strong painkillers at the hospital in Tampere to help him rest," he said.
