Neuer again rules out return to Germany national team

FC Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has again ruled out a return to the Germany national team.

"The fact is that I have decided not to play for the national team anymore," the goalkeeper told broadcaster Sky after Saturday's 5-0 win against SV Hamburg.

When asked whether he would definitely stick with this decision, the 2014 world champion replied without hesitation: "Yes."

Neuer's advisor Thomas Kroth had raised hopes among fans that the former DFB captain would return.

"He's in top shape and performing at his best. If [Germany coach] Julian Nagelsmann has a problem in that position, Manuel is healthy and if asked to play, then Manu would certainly not say no," Kroth told the German daily Frankfurter Rundschau earlier this week.

"We haven't spoken about it," Neuer explained when asked about Kroth's published remarks.

Neuer will be 40 years old when the next World Cup takes place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Sky pundit Lothar Matthäus was surprised by the goalkeeper's clear statement. He called Neuer's remarks "absolutely clear."

"On the other hand, it would have been another chance for him to show himself on the world stage," Matthäus added.

Neuer, 39, ended his national team career last year after the Euros on home soil.

Neuer had already said earlier this week that a return to the Germany national team is not on the cards for him.
