Six German suspects charged over 2023 attack on Hungarian far right

German federal prosecutors have indicted six suspected far-left extremists over attacks on far-right extremists in Hungary dating back to 2023, in a case related to a German national currently being tried in Hungary.
The six individuals are accused of involvement in attacks on actual and alleged far-right extremists in Budapest in February 2023, a spokeswoman for Germany's federal prosecutor's office in Karlsruhe confirmed to dpa on Friday.
The incident was linked to an annual far-right rally in the Hungarian capital marking an attempt by Nazi forces in 1945 to escape the Soviet Red Army.
The charges filed at a Dusseldorf court include membership in a criminal organization, grievous bodily harm as well as attempted murder.
The suspects turned themselves in to the authorities at the beginning of this year, with their lawyers hoping to prevent their extradition to Hungary and demanding criminal proceedings in Germany.
It is now up to the Dusseldorf Higher Regional Court to decide whether and when the trial will take place.
The group is believed to be linked to German national Maja T, who is currently imprisoned in Hungary over the attacks.
Maja T, who identifies as non-binary, was arrested in Berlin in December 2023 and extradited to Hungary in June 2024. Germany's Constitutional Court ordered the extradition to be halted, but the ruling came minutes too late to prevent the transfer.
The Hungarian public prosecutor's office accuses the detainee of being involved in the February 2023 attacks on right-wing extremists in Budapest and of causing serious bodily harm.
