Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has reached another milestone as Saturday's 2-0 at Holstein Kiel made him the coach with the longest unbeaten Bundesliga run away from home which now covers 28 matches.

Alonso bettered the mark of Udo Lattek who went unbeaten on the road in 27 games while in charge of Bayern Munich and Schalke, the Bundesliga website said.

Leverkusen's last Bundesliga defeat on the road came in May 2023 in the season finale, 3-0 at Bochum. They have only lost one league overall since then, 3-2 at home against RB Leipzig in August 2024.

Asked about the record after the Kiel match, Alonso said: "We’ve developed a top mentality, as this record shows.

"We’re efficient, we’re stable. We want to demonstrate those qualities again in our next away game in Frankfurt."

Leverkusen said that Saturday's victory also makes Alonso the first coach in club history to beat every team he has faced in the Bundesliga, 21 in his case.

Leverkusen, who famously won the league last season unbeaten, moved within five points of leaders Bayern Munich, who host Frankfurt later on Sunday.
